美国流行音乐界有一个很有名的民谣三重唱 Peter, Paul and Mary，他们自己写过很多名曲，也唱别人的歌。
Torn between two lovers 就是其中的团员 Peter Yarrow 和友人合写的歌，也是美国流行音乐史上描述婚外情的作品中，相当有名的一首。这首歌的原始灵感，是来自文学名著「齐瓦哥医生」中男主角的遭遇。原本这首歌打算交由当时名气响亮的Olivia Newton John 奥莉薇亚纽顿强或 Anne Murray 安玛莉来演唱，但后来决定把机会让给没没无名的 Mary MacGregor。
Mary MacGregor 本人当初怕这首歌的内容会引来一些好事者的流言，一度考虑拒唱，但经不起这首歌可能走红的诱惑。这首歌后来果然不负众望，登上了全美排行冠军。而她的已婚身分，让人以为歌中的女主角就是影射她本人，使她从此无法像以往一样过着安定平凡的生活，最后终于和原本感情不错的丈夫协议分居，结束了五年的婚姻。而她以后再也没有其它的畅销曲出现，从此在歌坛销声匿迹。
