This is the most popular kind of account in a bank. Funds are paid in by the customer, who may also ask his employer to pay his wages or salary direct into the account by means of a bank giro credit. The customer is usually issued with a cheque book although some customers use their accounts solely1 for the payment of standing2 orders or direct debits4. Funds may be withdrawn5 on demand either by drawing cash by cheque at the branch where the account is maintained or by writing cheques in favour of another person.

Current accounts should always be maintained in credit unless overdraft6 arrangements have been previously7 made. These arrangements will include an agreed “limit” on the account beyond which the customer should not draw.
Interest is calculated on the amount of overdraft on a daily basis and charged to the account half-yearly, at a rate based on the percentage over the bank's base rate. Where facilities for an overdraft are granted, the bank may also make a special charge for arranging them and committing the bank's money, whether the facilities are used or not. Security may be required to back an overdrawn8 account.
Interest is not paid by banks when a current account is in credit. Instead, charges are made on the basis of the number of transactions passing through the account. If any charges are to be made they are debited9 either quarterly or half-yearly.

Most banks do not charge for payments into the accounts but operate a charge for debits such as cheques paid, standing orders and direct debits. The cost of these items is calculated quarterly or haft-yearly by the bank's computer and against this is set off “notional” rate of interest on the customer's average credit balance during the period. Where the “notional” interest exceeds the cost of the debit3 items no charge is made, although no interest is credited to the account.
Nowadays all the major banks either publish their scale of charges or will explain them to a customer or potential customer on request.
Current account holders10 are entitled to make use of most services of the bank.
