　这是一首相当深情的歌曲，歌中的男主角汤米为了赚得一只给萝拉的结婚戒指，参加了危险性极高的非法赛车，结果赔上了自己的性命，临终前仍不忘说：告诉萝拉我爱她……。

　但是对这首歌推出时的60年代，这种涉及死亡的歌词，在美国当时保守的社会风气，却是相当引人争议的，虽然歌中提及的死亡是十分含蓄而且微不足道，但在许多卫道人士对刚兴起的摇滚乐还视为洪水猛兽的当时，这首语涉死亡的歌曲，简直是道德的沦丧，对生命的亵渎。

　这首歌除了歌词耸动，旋律动人也使得它一推出就造成轰动，并很快流传到英国，但60年代的英国社会比美国还要封闭保守，对于流行音乐采取极为严密的监控，凡语涉死亡等反道德的歌曲，尤其是和年轻人有关的，一律被国家广播电台( 即BBC )禁播，因此在宣传无门的情形下，很多在美国走红的歌曲，在英国却没没无名。

　于是美国的RCA唱片公司决定放弃在英国发行这首歌，但当时的英国EMI唱片公司却决定放手一搏，另外请来英国当地的歌手Ricky Valance重新翻唱。结果灌录好以后的新版本，被一家影响力不大的广播电台看中，不断的播出这首歌，一传十、十传百，这首歌在英国排行榜节节上升，最后在冠军宝座上坐了三个礼拜才功成身退。
