　这首歌曲的内容，是一则发生在美国的真实故事。故事的主角是一位因倒闭破产而被判服刑三年的男子，在出狱前夕，他写了一封信给在乔治亚州的妻子，问她是否还愿意接纳他，如果愿意的话，便在他出狱当天，在家门前那棵老橡树上系上一条黄丝带，如果答案是否的话，也就是他没有看到黄丝带的话，他会识趣的离开。
　在返家的公车上，男主角的心里七上八下，既期待又怕受伤害，在即将到家的时候，他甚至不敢睁开眼睛，而恳求公车司机帮他打探结果………………终于，谜底揭晓了，只听见公车司机和车上所有的乘客同声为他欢呼，他睁开双眼，竟然看到老橡树上数以百计的黄丝带在风中飞舞，顿时感动得热泪盈眶！
　这首歌后来在美国成为一种风俗：在家门前的树上系上黄丝带，以欢迎久别归来的亲人。
