　这是约翰蓝侬写给第二任太太──小野洋子（Yako Ono）的情歌。日本籍的小野洋子是位艺术家，作风大胆前卫，讲求新鲜与刺激的生活方式，带给约翰蓝侬另一种精神生活的价值观，据说约翰蓝侬就是因为结识了小野洋子，而和披头四其它成员日益疏远，间接促成了披头四的解散。
　小野洋子曾和约翰蓝侬出过一张名为「童男处女」（Two virgins）的专辑，封面就是两人正面全裸的照片，在当时倍受非议，很多唱片行不得不另外包装或者根本拒绝陈售。
　1980年，约翰蓝侬和小野洋子发行了「双重幻象」（Double fantasy）这张经典专辑，里头就包含了这首「Woman」以及写给儿子的「Beautiful boy」。
　几个月后，约翰蓝侬在纽约自家门前遭受枪击身亡。隔年的葛莱美奖典礼上，这张专辑获得年度最佳专辑、最佳单曲等殊荣，小野洋子数度携子含泪上台领奖，令人难忘。
