LONGING¹ FOR XIN THE ELDER
MENG HAORAN
 
Suddenly daylight fades o'er western hill;
Gradually climbs the moon o'er eastern pool.
With windows open, at ease I lie still;
With hair unloosed, I enjoy evening cool.
The breeze brings fragrance² from the lotus fair;
Dewdrops drip off bamboos with a splash clear.
I'd like to take my lute³ and play an air,
But I can find no connoisseur⁴ to hear.
How I long for you, my friend out of sight!
I wish you'd come in my dream at midnight.

山光忽西落，池月渐东上。
散发乘夕凉，开轩卧闲敞。
荷风送香气，竹露滴清响。
欲取鸣琴弹，恨无知音赏。
感此怀故人，中宵劳梦想。
