Ricky Ponting has resigned as Australia captain but says he wants to play on for the team.

Ponting took over the Test captaincy from Steve Waugh in 2004
The 36-year-old made the announcement in Sydney after arriving home following his side's World Cup quarter-final defeat to co-hosts India.

"I have decided¹ to stand down（退出） as captain of the Test and one-day teams as of now," he told a news conference.

Michael Clarke, who stood in for Ponting in some matches this winter, is tipped to replace him as skipper.

Ponting took over the one-day captaincy in 2002 and the Test captaincy from Steve Waugh in 2004 and leaves a legacy² of having been the most successful captain in 134 years of Test cricket.

Australia's home Ashes defeat to England and a quarter-final exit at the hands of India at this year's World Cup, where Australia were defending champions, has hastened（加速） his departure.
