词组讲解

1. do away with sb. or sth. ***杀掉，除掉；废除，停止，取消

解 短语动词；词义溯源：做［除掉（away）］某人或某物的行为

例 The city ought to do away with some of these old laws that nobody follows and the police

don't even enforce anymore. They're just adding pages to the law books.

2. do by sb. ***对待某人

解 〈口〉短语动词；词义溯源：［用某种方式（by）］对待某人；通常可以在do和by

之间加入well，badly，all right，hard等词

例 Take your car to Bob's Auto¹ Repair. He'll do right by you.

3. do credit to sb. / do sb. credit **为…增光

解 习语；词义溯源：给予某人［名望、荣誉（credit）］；参照do sb. proud

例 Gershwin's presence at the recital² did credit to the new academy, which some say may be

the Julliard of the future. He was invited by the first violinist of the Boston Pops, who graduated

from the academy in 1989.

4. do justice to sb. or sth. / do sb. or sth. justice **公平对待；对（事物）作充分了解；

尽情享用（大量食物）

例 Give my violin to James after I die. He's the only one who could do it justice. James has

the same feeling for the violin that I had. He plays it like it's a living extension of his heart—just

like I used to.

5. do one's own thing / do one's thing **做自己喜欢的事，想干什么就干什么

解 〈口〉习语；词义溯源：做［自己独有（one's own）］的［事情（thing）］

例 The generation gap between my parents and I was just too much and there were too many

restrictions³ at home, so I moved out and came to Beijing where I could do my own thing.
