词组讲解

1. get the runaround **听到各种借口，受到推诿或搪塞，被骗

解 习语；词义溯源：得到［借口、推诿、搪塞、欺骗（runaround）］；give sb. the

runaround表示“想方设法推诿”

例 You'll never find out who ordered the police to raid¹ your building. If you inquire, you'll

just get the runaround. They'll just send you from office to office and you'll never get the answer.

2. get the sack 〔ax〕 *被解雇；被拒绝

解 俚语；词义溯源：遭受［炒鱿鱼、拒绝（the sack）或解雇（the ax）］

例 The boss has told his workers that if they continue to be unconcerned about doing their

work, they would be sure to get the sack sooner or later.

3. get a load off one's mind **卸下心里的负担，道出自己的心境

解 〈口〉习语；词义溯源：从心里［分离（off）］从而移走［负担、担忧（load）］

例 When something like a problem or a heavy responsibility has been worrying you and then

you discover that the problem has been solved or the responsibility has been lifted, you can say

“That's a load off my mind!” Of course getting a load off your mind makes you feel a lot better.

4. get 〔have, end up with〕 the short end of the stick **受藐视，受冷落；最 吃亏

例 I'm not going to get the short end of the stick again like I did the two times before. We're

going to split² the profits 50-50 or I'm not getting involved at all.

5. get the show on the road *开始（某事物），付诸实施

例 It's time everybody. It's time. Let's get the show on the road. Everybody ready? No? Well

hurry then. I'll give you three more minutes and then we're starting.
