CheckA check is a written order by an account holder¹ to his bank to pay a certain sum of money to the payee. A check is not legal tender.

Crossed CheckA check that has two lines across it to denote that it must be paid into a bank account.

Cash Check A check that can be redeemed² for cash at a bank. The bank generally has to be the account holder's bank.

Bounced Check A check that the bank refuses to pay because of insufficient³ funds in the customer's account. Also called a bad or dishonored check.

Clearance⁴ PeriodThe number of days required to settle a check deposited into an account. Generally 3 to 4 days.

DrawerThe account holder or the person who signs the check.

DraweeThe bank that is going to pay the amount of money specified⁵ on the check.
