Suspecting the daughter may have caught encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain with similar symptoms, the worried parents then brought her to the Second Affiliated¹ Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine for treatment. Medical checks excluded encephalitis and doctors finally determined² the girl's symptoms are the result of a sibling³ rivalry⁴ disorder⁵.

“同胞竞争障碍”英文表达是sibling rivalry disorder，所谓同胞竞争障碍，是指通常在年龄稍小的弟弟妹妹出生之后，发生的某种程度的情感紊乱(emotional disturbance)。程度轻重和表现形式个体存在很大差异，还可能出现焦虑，抑郁等精神症状。这个10岁小女孩出现头痛、呕吐和精神萎靡(suffered from headaches, vomiting⁶ and low spirits)等症状，是典型的“同胞竞争障碍”的症状。
