Is organic food better for you than the standard fare in grocery stores? Well, Phil Reay Smith has the results of one new study that might surprise you.
PHIL REAY SMITH, ITN REPORTER
The stores offer an array of fresh and delicious looking food, but shoppers who fund the E2.1 billion annual market in organic produce3 might find the Food Standard Agency's new study leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. The study appears clear enough. It claims there is little if any nutritional1 difference between organic and conventionally produced food and no evidence of any additional health benefit from eating it.
PHIL REAY SMITH, ITN REPORTER
The FSA say the findings are intended to help people make an informed choice, but they also call into question the higher price of organic food. If you take one organic carrot and one that is non-organic, the truth is the only difference would be in your wallet, and not in a good way.
AL OVERTON, PLANET ORGANIC
What you are getting is a product... is a carrot that was grown in better soil that has high nutritional value, and consequent is more nutritionally concentrated, so that one carrot will have a greater benefit to your health than the conventional product.
PHIL REAY SMITH, ITN REPORTER
The Soil Association claims organic has many different advantages. For example, organic milk contains 70 percent more essential fatty acids. Organic fruit and veg contain fewer pesticides2, and organic meat is, they claim, free of BSE and reared using far fewer antibiotics3.
Some shoppers were surprised by the study's conclusion, but others said they weren't buying organic food because they thought it was better for them.
SHOPPER
You might be spending a bit more, but ultimately you're actually spending less because you're getting twice the amount of nutrition.
PHIL REAY SMITH, ITN REPORTER
A study published today says that there is no nutritional benefit in organic food.
SHOPPER
Really? Um...
SHOPPER
There's also what it doesn't have in it, rather than whether it has nutritional benefits. It's what it also doesn't have.
PHIL REAY SMITH, ITN REPORTER
And people in the organic food industry, like AI Overton, believe it's that lack of pesticides and better reputation for animal welfare that will keep customers coming.
