WALL · E and EVE quietly entered the dark control room of the ship's emergency escape center. EVE found her way to the console that controlled the escape pods. She began tapping commands into the keyboard.

 

WALL · E glanced down at EVE's hand. He interlocked his own hands and thought that perhaps this was the right moment to take hers. "Eee-vah?" he said softly.

 

Before he could take her hand, the control console's lights blinked on and an escape pod appeared at the end of the room. Its hatch slowly tilted¹ open.

 

EVE turned to WALL · E. "Earth," she said, pointing to an overhead screen. The screen displayed the coordinates² of WALL · E's smoggy home planet.

 

She gestured for WALL · E to enter the pod, and the little robot rolled in. He looked back happily and patted the seat next to him. He was waiting for EVE to join him. But EVE wasn't moving. WALL · E gestured again for her to come, but she shook her head. She pointed³ to her chest and made her plant symbol glow.

 

"Directive," she said. She would stay behind to complete her directive.

 

As soon as WALL · E realized she wasn't going with him, he raced out of the pod and boxed up.

 

EVE sighed. She wanted WALL · E to go home and be safe. Then she could complete her directive without all the trouble he was causing her. She picked him up and carried him back into the pod. WALL · E raced out and tried to hide behind the console.

 

"WALL · E," EVE said, staring impatiently at the love-struck robot.

 

The chime of the elevator interrupted their standoff. Someone was coming!

 

EVE quickly shut down the control panel and retreated into the shadows with WALL · E. They heard something motor into the room, but it was too dark to see what it was.

 

An arm rose up to the console, and a robotic hand worked the keyboard. The lights blinked back on. In the glow, WALL · E and EVE saw ... Gopher. The two bots exchanged a confused glance as Gopher removed something from his chest panel and placed it in the pod.

 

It was the plant! Shocked, EVE realized that Gopher had been working against her all along. He must have taken the plant from her while she was shut down.

 

WALL · E gazed at EVE. Now there was proof that he hadn't taken the plant from her! EVE acknowledged this with a sheepish shrug⁴. She looked up to see Gopher returning to the console. He tapped another series of buttons.

 

When she turned back to WALL · E, he was gone. "WALL · E?" she whispered. He was inside the pod, trying to retrieve⁵ the plant for her.

 

"WALL · E!" she whispered again, calling him back. But just then, Gopher hit the launch button. Whoosh⁶! The escape pod was instantly jettisoned⁷ into space. EVE watched as the plant—and WALL · E—slipped away from her.

她示意瓦力进入逃生舱，这个小机器人慢慢驶了进去。他快活地回头看，拍了拍他身旁的座位，等着伊芙坐到他旁边。但是伊芙没有动。瓦力再次示意她进来，但是她摇了摇头。她指了指她的胸部，点亮了她的植物符号。

 

“指令。”她说道。她要留下来完成她的使命。

 

瓦力一弄明白她不打算跟他一起去，就冲出逃生舱并缩成 盒状。

 

伊芙叹息了一声。她希望瓦力平安回家。然后她就能完成她的使命而不受到他引起的各种麻烦的打扰。她把瓦力举起来送回逃生舱。瓦力冲了出来，试图藏到操纵台后面。

 

“瓦力。”伊芙说道，她不耐烦地瞪着这个痴情的机器人。

 

电梯的铃声打破了他们的僵局。有人来了！

 

伊芙快速关闭控制面板，和瓦力一起躲到阴影处。他们听到有东西进了房间，但是太暗了看不清是什么。

 

一条手臂伸向操纵台，一只机械手在键盘上操作。灯重新闪亮。在灯光中，瓦力和伊芙看见……戈法。两个机器人看见戈法从他胸部面板内取出什么东西放到了逃生舱内，交换了一个不明所以的眼神。

 

是那株植物！伊芙大吃一惊，意识到戈法一直在和她作对。他肯定是趁着她休眠的时候拿走了那株植物。

 

瓦力注视着伊芙。现在终于有证据表明他没有从她那里拿走那株植物！伊芙不好意思地耸了一下肩，表示承认这一点。她抬起头来看见戈法回到操纵台前。他又按了另外一串按键。

 

当她转身找瓦力的时候，他不见了。“瓦力？”她低声唤道。他已经赶到逃生舱内，试图为她取回那株植物。

 

“瓦力！”她又一次低声唤他回来。但就在这个时候，戈法按下了“发射”键。“呼”的一声，逃生舱立刻被扔到太空中。伊芙眼睁睁看着那株植物——还有瓦力——离她而去。
