Up on the ship's bridge, Auto1 lazily watched the lido deck's sky turn from day to evening. Just below him, in the Captain's quarters, a computer was flashing images to the Captain one after the other.
"Define ‘hoedown'!" the Captain told the computer.
The computer responded, "Hoedown: a special gathering2 at which lively forms of dancing would take place."
The Captain slapped his knee, enjoying every bit of Earth information he could get his chubby3 hands on.
"Auto!" he exclaimed. "Earth is amazing!" He highlighted images on his computer as he spoke5. "These are called farms!" Auto turned a bored eye to the screen as the Captain showed him fields of wheat and orchards6 of apples. "Humans would put seeds in the ground, pour water on them, and they would grow food, like pizza!"
Auto shut the screen. "Goodnight, Captain," he said, rising back to the bridge. The lights in the Captain's quarters went dark. Auto was telling the Captain that it was time to go to bed.
"Pssst," the Captain whispered to his computer. He was like a child who wanted to stay up to play. Only, in this case, the Captain wanted to know more about Earth. "Define ‘dancing.'"
"Dancing," the computer began. At that moment, just outside the Captain's window, WALL · E and EVE spiraled around each other. "A series of movements involving two partners, where speed and rhythm match harmoniously7 with music."
Indeed, WALL · E and EVE were dancing. And, in a way, the Captain was dancing, too—at least in his mind.
Outside the Axiom, WALL · E's fire extinguisher spurted8 out its last bit of foam9. He floated freely for a moment; then EVE took him in her arms to return him to the ship. To WALL · E, this was a dream come true.
Back inside the Axiom, EVE slowly led WALL · E down the corridors, trying to get to the Captain. A group of stewards10 passed by. The computer warned, "Caution! Rogue11 robots!" EVE pulled WALL · E aside to hide.
How could EVE get to the bridge to deliver the plant to the Captain?
