这首歌的原唱者为一希腊籍的团体—爱神之子合唱团（Aphrodite's child），而这首歌最特别的地方，在于它是由著名的古典作品「卡农」（Canon）改编而成。「卡农」是古典音乐中一种特定的曲式，最著名的是巴洛克时期德籍作曲家帕海贝尔的作品。说得直接一点，「雨和泪」是运用帕海贝尔的「卡农」和弦填上新的旋律所产生的一首歌。
爱神之子合唱团的团员都受过古典音乐的训练，其中的键盘手特别值得一提。这位键盘手名叫范吉利斯（Vangelis），后来他努力钻研电子音乐，推出很多脍炙人口的作品，国内有很多电视广告或节目都曾引用他的作品作为背景音乐。此外，他也为电影编写配乐，较著名的有“火战车”“银翼杀手”“1492”“南极物语”等，其中“火战车”还获得奥斯卡最佳配乐。
