An old hunter¹ moved to a new place. He got² lost in the wood several³ times. A friend told him to buy a pocket⁴ compass⁵ and explained⁶ its use to him. But the soon got lost again and stayed out.

 

When he was⁷ found⁸ and asked why he did⁹ not use the compass, he said¹⁰: "It was very difficult to deal¹¹ with. I wished to go north and tried hard to make the thing point north. But it wasn't any use. It would¹² shake¹³, shake right round, and point south-east every time."

 

有个老猎人迁到一个新地方。他在森林里迷路了好几次。一个朋友告诉他去买个小指南针，还给他讲了怎么用，可是，他很快就又迷路了，在森林里出不来。

 

当他被找到时，问他为什么不用指南针引路时，他说：“这玩意儿太难对付了。我想向北走，就竭力把这个东西拨到指向北方。可是一点用都没有。它会晃动起来，每次都要晃上一圈，然后又指向东南方了。”
