Tulong Zizhu told Chang Yang who had come to learn archery under him a story that contained principles of archery in it: the king of the state of Chu once hunted in Yun Mengze. A stopped dear ran out to his left, the king aimed an arrow at it and just before letting the arrow go, an elk¹ appeared to his right. When he was about to shoot the elk, a swan flew by. The king was totally lost as to which one to shoot.

 

Yang Youji, a master of archery, came over to the king and said, "If a leaf is put a hundred paces away, I can shoot it ten times without missing² it. If ten leaves are there, I am not sure if I can still do it."

 

屠龙子朱对前学习射箭的常羊讲了一个蕴含射箭道理的小故事：楚王在云梦泽打猎，左边跑出一只梅花鹿，楚王张弓搭箭，刚想射，发现右边又跑出来一只麋鹿。当他准备射麋鹿时，头顶的天空中有一只天鹅飞过，一时之间，楚王不知该射什么好。

 

神箭手养由基见了，上前对楚王说：“如果把一片树叶放在百步以外，我能够射十箭中十箭，如果放十片树叶，能否射中，我一点把握也没有。”
