"Shirtfront" has been named Australia's 2014 word of the year, the Australian National University announced on Wednesday on behalf of the Australian National Dictionary Center.
澳大利亚国立大学周三代表澳大利亚国家辞典中心宣布shirtfront当选澳大利亚2014年度词语。
The center selected shirtfront after the word rose to prominence1 after Prime Minister Tony Abbott promised to "shirtfront" Russian President Vladimir Putin over the down of the Malaysian airline MH17 over Ukraine.
马来西亚航空MH17航班在乌克兰上空坠毁后,澳大利亚总理阿伯特曾声称要shirtfront俄罗斯总统普京。在此之后,shirtfront一词便成为热门词汇,该中心也将该词列入备选。
According to the center, shirtfront is a verb chiefly used in Australian rules football, meaning to deliver an aggressive front- on bump to an opponent, or a verb figuratively used to mean to challenge or confront (a person).
据该中心提供的解释,shirtfront是澳式橄榄球运动中常用的一个动词,指面朝对手进行具有攻击性的正面对撞,也可以引申为挑战某人。中文多译为“抱摔”。
It was chosen from a shortlist including the terms, "Team Australia," "man-bun," "Ned Kelly beard," and "coward punch."
其他被列入候选的词语包括:Team Australia(澳洲之队),man-bun(男士发髻),Ned Kelly beard(凯利党胡须)以及coward punch(突然出击)。
