Why is setting goals important?Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life.71 just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.
Successful people 72 how their life should be and set lots of goals .By setting goals you are 73 your life. It’s like having a 74 to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way .There are 75 drivers. One has a destination(目的地)in mind (her goal )which can be found on a map. She can drive straight there without any 76 time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map .She starts off at the sane14 time from the same place as the first driver, 77 she drives aimlessly around, never getting where, just 78 gas. Which driver do you want to be ?
Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making 79 and setting goals. 80 people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set-and they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are .You are the one who must 81 what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life.
Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more 82 to achieve it. Written goals can be 83 regularly, and have more power. Like a contract (合同)with yourself, they are harder to neglect15 or forget. Also 84 you write your goals in a particular way you are able to make yourself continuously 85 situations that will bring you nearer to your goal.

It was 3.12 a. m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the crackling(爆裂声)of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin, Long Island.
With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed18 on the lawn19.
The nine-year-old raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room. He found it impossible to waked her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and ,as a fireman said later,“acted with all the self-control of a trained adult.”
On the bedroom telephone, luckily still wording, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving20 his mother.
First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.
He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?
Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother’s room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful33 for their children’s safety on the roads.
Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided34 that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.
The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government have said in the past that they will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster.
Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations35 have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should  be less than £20 a term.
They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided36 for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

Michael, a typical(典型的)American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal38 in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary39, but his lifestyle is very possible .The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from contact with our fellow human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating40 us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals41 in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing42 with .In addition ,the way employees are paid will change .Workers’ salaries will be automatically43 paid into their bank accounts (账户),making paper checks (支票)unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking44 will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts.
Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance45, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings46 .For many people now, however music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms.
101.  After work, Michael likes to _____.
A. listen to music at the concert hall
B. watch a movie in his living room
C. run a program on his computer in his office
D. play baseball with his workmates
102. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Clerks will able to work at home.
B. One can play baseball on the computer.
C. One can listen to music without disturbing others.
D. One can borrow books from libraries at home.
103. The sentence “Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible” means_______.
A. Michael is a person full of imagination and he can make his dreams come true
B. Michael is not a real person but the lifestyle does exist
C. Michael has ambitions but he can’t make his dreams come true
D. Michael is a person full of imagination and his lifestyle is common nowadays
104. What will the author most probably discuss after the last paragraph?
A. Games and sports.
B. Personal banking.
C. Music and films.
D. International business.
105. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. We may no longer need to communicate with other human beings.
B. Modern technology seems to be separating human beings.
C. We may no longer need to work in the office.
D. Modern technology makes it possible for us to work and entertain ourselves at home.
