Chinanews, Changchun, May 24 – Jilin Province is planning to set up a free trade zone between China and North Korea. The free trade zone will be located in Nanyang workers district at Onsŏng-gun of North Hamgyŏng Province in DPRK, which is close to Tumen port in Jilin of China, officials from the Tumen Municipal Commercial Bureau told this reporter on Wednesday.
This will be the third free trade zone for Jilin to set up between China and North Korea. The free trade zone will not only expand Chinese market in North Korea, it may also become an important trade center for China, Russia, and North Korea. At present, Jilin provincial1 government has already approved the project. Local officials from North Korea also said that they had reported the project to the central government and was waiting for its approval. Nanyang workers district is a small town located at the eastern part of Tumen River. It sits opposite to the Yanbian Korean Autonomous2 Prefecture that lies on the western bank of Tumen River. Experts say that establishing the free trade zone in Tumen city will bring several benefits. Tumen port is the only state-level port in Jilin Province that is connected with North Korea by road and rail where citizens with valid3 passports from a third country are allowed to pass. Tumen port became an open port in 1950 and has developed into an important delivery center among China, North Korea, Russia and Japan. Nanyang workers district is located within one of the important open ports in North Korea and it is the only town that sits close to a foreign country. It is said that Onsŏng-gun is applying for establishment as a special economic zone in North Korea.
