Chinanews, Beijing, March 22 - "There are a lot of courses available in my university, but many of them are hardly useful at all. Besides, most of the courses are not deep enough, including quite a number of major subjects in my field of study, " said Zhu, a senior from Communication University of China.
According to a survey conducted by some education authority in China, even in the 8 most famous research universities in China, only 49% of the students are satisfied with the quality of their college education. "We don't even have very good textbooks," said Pan, a junior from Peking University. "The textbooks compiled by Chinese are usually full of mistakes, while the textbooks from abroad are not quite compatible with our education system. Besides, not all of us can understand textbooks in English," complained Pan. The quality of many teachers' lectures is doubtful, too. "Truancy1 rate is very high, even in many well-known teacher's classes," said Wang, a school inspector2, after checking the classes in a very famous university. Students are not enthusiastic about attending "boring" classes, and on their part teachers will only be even less enthusiastic about teaching after finding that their classes are not very popular. "Many courses in our universities are of little help to the future job-hunting of the students, and also we have to admit that some of them only contain knowledge that is out of date. How can students be expected to be interested in them? Besides, there are some teachers who are not worthy3 of their titles. They might be good researchers, but poor teachers, or even poor in both capacities," said Yang Zhaoshan, from Northeast Normal University.
