Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 25 – The Public Security Management Bureau under the Ministry1 of Public Security recently carried out a survey among all permanent residents (people with a permanent residence permit) across the country. The survey shows that “Wang” is the most popular surname in China, with about 92.88 million people having Wang as their family name, accounting2 for 7.25% of the total population.
The second most popular surname is “Li”. About 92.07 million Chinese people share this surname, accounting for 7.19% of the total population. The third most popular surname is Zhang, with 87.50 million people, or 6.83% of the total population, having such family name. There are ten surnames each with the number of people having such surnames exceeding 20 million. They are: Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Zhao, Wu, and Zhou. In addition, there are 12 surnames each with the number of people having these surnames reaching 10-20 million. These surnames are: Xu, Sun, Ma, Zhu, Hu, Guo, He, Gao, Lin, Luo, Zheng, and Liang. The number of Chinese people whose family names belong to the top 100 surnames accounts for 84.77% of the Chinese population.
