May 10 - Two Beijing-based websites have been asked to issue a public apology for offering pornographic video displays and downloads.
The municipal internet administration on Wednesday asked the two websites – at www.uusee.com and zol.com.cn - to publish formal letters of apology on their front pages by Thursday. The website owners have also been ordered to remove the offending content immediately. The bureau has asked other government departments to further investigate and punish the websites for disseminating1 illegal and immoral2 information. The bureau held a press conference on April 3, calling for concerted efforts to supervise online content, remove "unhealthy" information and oppose actions that hamper3 the development of Internet business. Thirty-six websites have resolved to exercise self-discipline in relation to the information they pose. They have also pledged to oppose actions that undermine "Internet civilization". Some profit-driven websites are choosing to disregard the malign4 public influence of their work. They have failed to improve the nature of the content on their websites, the watchdog noted5.
