Chinanews, Chengdu, May 11 – According to a survey among 3,000 college students from 7 universities in Chongqing about the motivation of receiving college education, 30.5% of the interviewed say that they go to college because this will help to “find a good job”. The survey was conducted by Southwest University.
The survey shows that over 40 percent of the interviewed say their No.1 purpose of going to college is to realize their self-satisfaction. 4.5% of them attribute their direct motivation of college study to "the possession of a private car and an apartment", 2.5% say they want to acquire “higher social status and more social power”, and 6.5% indicate that they go to college to “enrich the life content and better the life quality”. By sharp contrast, over 50% of the respondents hold the view that it is the social responsibility concerned with the country, the family and the nation that should come first in mentioning the motivation of college studies. When asked about the most decisive1 motivation of college study, 29.5% choose “to rejuvenate2 the great country”, 12% choose”to contribute to the cultural and scientific undertakings3 of human beings”, and 6.5% choose “to change the destiny4 of the family and improve parents’ life”. The survey also shows that the higher the students’ grades are, the more materialistic5 and self-related their attitude towards the goal of college study will be. It is believed that the very reason for this is that students of higher grades have more knowledge about the society, thus may feel heavier pressure from the crucial competition of the job market which they will face in their near future.
