Chinanews, Guangzhou, May 16 – What is the reason leading to suicide among college undergraduates in China? This is one of the topics discussed at the academic seminar on China's university culture held last Saturday (May 13) in Zhongshan University in Guangzhou.
Yang Zhenbin, a senior official with the Ministry1 of Education, say that undergraduates in China have a much lower rate of suicide than in the U.S. This is believed to be related with the unique college dormitory and class management system in China. “China has a very high suicide rate, say, 23 out of 100 thousand people will commit suicide. Contrary to this, the suicide rate among Chinese undergraduates is much lower than the total incidence in Chinese society. This is a characteristic of China!” said Yang. "We should learn more from the advanced countries while, at the same time, we should stick to the characteristics of our own," said Yang.
