Chinanews, Beijing, June 5 - A very detailed1 report on adolescents' usage of the Internet in China was published in Beijing on June 3.
The report says that 85.21% of the respondents have used the Internet, 52.90% of whom have been using it for less than 1 year. Nearly 50% of the respondents like to on surf the Internet at home. About 45.05% of the respondents consider the main function of the Internet as an entertainment, while 17.89% use it as a tool of communication. Some 15.65% of them also believe Internet is very helpful to their studies. 66.01% of the respondents have tried online games. Nearly 40% of them appreciate the convenience of the Internet to their life and studies, and 74,90% promise that they are not addicted2 to it. However, nearly 41% of the respondents believe some of their school mates have fallen victim to Internet addiction3. Though Internet addiction is not a common problem in China, its harm should not be overlooked. About 50% of teachers and 40% of parents think adolescents should be guided when they surf on the Internet to avoid appropriate contents. Besides, some 70% of adolescents also want such guidance. It is suggested that there should be more specific websites for adolescents.
