Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 2 – The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) issued a notification on Wednesday requiring various local radio and TV broadcasting institutions to abide1 by related regulations when airing an advertisement. Ads that promote illegal medical products or sex tonic2 products are forbidden to be aired. Advertisements that have sex suggestive contents are also banned. Airing these advertisements has greatly damaged the public credibility of radio and TV stations, SARFT said.
In its notification, SARFT criticizes some local radio and TV broadcasting institutions which, in seeking economic gains, have continued to air illegal ads against SARFT's regulations. It lists four types of phenomena3 and points out that these phenomena have greatly damaged radio and TV's public credibility. The four phenomena include airing a large number of low-grade ads that contain sex suggestive contents or contain false information in promoting products like medical devices, medicines or sex tonics4; interrupting a TV program by airing commercials many times (in some places, a film broadcast on TV can be interrupted by TV commercials as many as 8 times, with the total time length for airing the commercials reaching 20 minutes); airing an ad in the form of rolling scripts at the bottom or upper corner of the TV screen or publicizing the contact information of some institutions that provide illegal short message services or audio guides; and illegally changing the ads of another TV or radio station when airing their programs.
SARFT requires all local radio and TV institutions to stop airing illegal ads that exaggerate the functions of medical devices, medicines, or sex tonics. Advertisements with sex suggestive contents should also be banned. At the same time, it requires local radio and TV institutions to correct their wrongdoings of punctuating5 TV programs with too many commercials or airing ads with rolling scripts.
