Chinanews, Beijing, Aug. 31 – According to Guangming Daily, Xiongxian County in Hebei Province was recently named as “cradle of ancient tunnels in China”.
Experts say that the ancient tunnels cover a total area of 1,300 sq m. They believed these carefully designed tunnels were built in the Liao (916-1125) and Song dynasties (960-1279). These tunnels had remained in oblivion for hundreds of years, until local people found them when building new houses. The tunnels have many rooms for different usages1, and there are also pitfalls2 for intruders.
