Chinanews, Beijing, October 9 – From 2001 to 2005, the total scale of college education in China had increased by nearly 100%, covering 25 million students. That is to say, about 22% of young people in China had received college education in those five years.
Chinese colleges have worked hard to optimize1 the offering of fields of study to meet the demands of the market in recent years. For example, the number of engineering students recruited in 2006 was much larger than in 2005. Meanwhile, China has eventually put rural compulsory2 education under its public finance insurance, thus children from poor rural areas can afford education. Great achievements have also been made to upgrade training schools, to improve the quality of labor3 forces. In 2006, 1.65 million illiterates4 became literate5, and 14.3 million people got certificates from various non-academic education institutes.
