Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 13 – A public pingpong sports venue1 in Beijing downtown recently has a busy time, as lots of primary and middle school students living nearby come to play pingpong during their winter vacation, the China Youth Daily reported.
And not only pingpong, sports like fencing and Taekwondo are also gaining popularity2 among students these days. Ms. Li recently applied3 for a table tennis lesson for her son, Xiao Qiang, a thin boy and a grade three pupil in primary school. Ms. Li told this reporter that Xiao Qiang attended three physical education lessons every week, so he did not have time to do any more physical exercises. “No parents would like to see their children grow only to be a study machine at school. We all hope that our children can grow healthy both mentally and physically4. If the school cannot provide enough physical exercises for our kids, then it’s our parents’ responsibility to see that they have some extra exercises,” she said. Ms. Wang applied for a fencing lesson for her kid, as she thinks that sports can not only make her kid grow physically strong, it can also temper his willpower and personality. However, as Ms. Wang said, the current physical lessons in schools can barely5 give students enough physical exercises, let alone temper their willpower or personality. Her son, Xiao Gang, is a grade four student in primary school. He looks a bit timid6, which Ms. Wang said is a shortcoming for boys and she tries to correct his shortcoming by giving him more exercises. The fencing club Xiao Gang attends requires an annual fee of 6,000 yuan, not including expenses for buying equipment, which usually costs about 1,000 yuan or more. Despite the high costs, many parents are still willing to come there. The fencing club was established half a year ago and there are currently7 30 students learning fencing in the club. “If the school could provide enough physical exercises for our kids, we wouldn't have come here,” said Ms. Wang. Ms. Shi applied for a swimming lesson for her daughter several days ago. Her daughter studies in the fifth grade in primary school. After learning swimming in school for one year, Ms. Shi was surprised to find that her daughter still couldn’t swim at all. Her daughter told her that in school, the teacher only taught them a few basic movements and then let them just play in the pool.
