Chinanews, Shanghai, February 14 – According to a survey by Oriental Outlook Weekly, Lhasa residents are the happiest among residents of all the 31 provincial1 and regional capitals and municipalities, particularly in the aspect of community atmosphere, money-making opportunities and urban planning in the past few years.
The survey covers community atmosphere, money-making opportunities, life conveniences, residential2 housing, ecoenvironment, entertainment, public security and urban planning in the past few years, to find out the level of satisfaction of the citizens. However, it does not provide a general evaluation3 of the “happiness index”of the cities. Lhasa being the capital of Tibet Autonomous4 Region, is considered to be a remote and isolated5 city by those who live in the coastal6 provinces. However, it beats all the rest 30 in the survey, with Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou next to it. The residents of Nanning and Changchun also appreciate good community atmosphere there, while Beijingers and Shanghainese do not, despite the fact that Beijing and Shanghai are much more economically developed. Higher income does not seem to have much to do with the sense of belongingness. The survey also suggests that Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou can provide good money-making opportunities, though they are behind Lhasa in this aspect. Lhasa, Yinchuan and Zhengzhou residents feel the most satisfied with urban planning in the past few years, while those who live in big cities don't.
