Chinanews, Nanjing, Feb. 27 – A recent investigation1 conducted among people living in 31 Chinese cities shows that people in Nanjing feel most secured and happy.
The survey was conducted from December 2006 to January 2007 by a team of experts led by Christopher K. Hsee, a tenured professor at the School of Business in the University of Chicago and a renowned2 scholar on Hedonomics, or the science of happiness. The survey was made through random3 phone calls to people living in 31 cities, including four Chinese municipalities, the capital cities of 22 Chinese provinces and the capital cities of five autonomous4 regions. About 7,000 samples were gathered for the survey and the result shows that a city’s security situation is a preliminary condition for people to have a sense of happiness by living in that city. The more secured people feel about a city, the happier they will feel living in that city. Among all the 31 cities investigated, residents in Nanjing, Hangzhou and Shanghai feel most secured about the cities they lived in. The investigation was worked out by directly asking respondents about the general impressions they have for the cities they live in, as well as their feelings about some specific aspects of the city, including social relations, transportation facilities, the chance of making money, living convenience, security conditions, and developmental situation over the past few years. The result shows that people in Shanghai live a most convenient life while natural environment in Haikou of Hainan Province is the best. Surprisingly, Lhasa ranks first in terms of the chance of making money.
