Chinanews, Beijing, March 5 – On March 4,the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the first lunar month), a grand drum concert with players from 50 bands all around China was given at the foot of the Badaling Great Wall.
Though it was very cold that day, tourists flocked to enjoy the show. The concert will last for 2 months to hail the 2008 Beijing Olympics, particularly on the day 500 days before the opening of the Games. A special percussion1 music week will be held in Beijing, too. Before the 5th Olympic Cultural Festival, a 1,000-strong drum band will be organized, to give a marvelous show at the Olympic forest park, which will make a new Guinness World Record. At the opening ceremony of the concert, a “dragon festooned vehicle” and a “Olympic drum” arrived in Beijing from Shanghai. The 17-m-long vehicle was decorated in the shape of a giant dragon with a large square stage on its back, where the drummers would give their performance. The Olympic Drum was made in Luoyang, Henan Province, with a diameter of 2.008 m, and a height of 1.28 m. There are 2,008 clinch2 bolts on its side. A giant brass3 Olympic gong was in place there, too. The sound of the 800-kg gong can last for over 2 minutes.
