Chinanews, Suzhou, Mar1. 14 – Do you want to buy a garden house in Suzhou to live like a wealthy country gentleman or spend the same amount of money buying a large apartment in the downtown area of Taiwan's cities? Recently, the Cti Television in Taiwan has made a feature program that focuses on the culture, architecture and economic development in Suzhou. The program has aroused Taiwan people’s interest in buying a house in the mainland. Many of them conducted an inspection2 tour to Suzhou with the hope that they might buy a classical garden style house there.
Most Taiwan businesspeople like to come to Suzhou to make investment in this city in the Yangtze River Delta3 region and many have bought a garden-style house there. As early as five years ago, some Taiwan compatriots who loved Suzhou's classical gardens went there and bought a house near the Suzhou garden area. Many Taiwan house buyers form a group to come to Suzhou and it seems that they favor the garden style house most. Among all these house buyers, some are the early settlers in Taiwan who want to spend the rest of their life in their hometown of Suzhou, others are the younger generation born and raised in Taiwan yet now working and setting up their families in Suzhou. All these house buyers, however, share the same interest in Suzhou garden-style houses, because these houses carry the elements of traditional Chinese culture. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, many scholars built their houses garden style, which could be used for both living and appreciation4. Since 2002, some commercial houses have been built in a garden style in the old downtown area in Suzhou. At present, there are some twenty such garden-style housing projects being built in the city. Suzhou is traditionally a hometown of the relatives of overseas Chinese. There are now 70,000 returned overseas Chinese or the relatives of overseas Chinese living in Suzhou. These people favor the garden house for it reflects the life once so familiar to them.
