Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 23 – The China Marriage Exposition Organizing Committee recently published the result of their survey on Chinese people’s expenditure1 on weddings. The survey shows that in Chinese cities, people spend an average of 560,000 yuan for their weddings. The finding is based on 60,000 questionnaires the committee gathered, the Jiefang Daily reported.
In China, the wedding expenditure usually includes costs for wedding photographing, services related with wedding celebrations, banquets, buying or renting wedding gowns and suits, buying jewelleries and houses, house decoration costs, buying household appliances and furniture, honeymoon2 trips, and car purchase.
Judging from a nationwide basis, Chinese newlyweds spend an average of 330,000 yuan alone on house purchase. People living in the northwest spend the least (150,000 yuan) while people in northern China spend the most (360,000 yuan) on house purchase. The average cost for house decoration is 50,000 yuan while the average cost for electronic appliances and furniture both exceeds 10,000 yuan.
In regard to the 560,000 yuan of average wedding cost, another website recently carried out a survey, asking people whether such costs were too much. About 8,054 people participated in this survey and the feedback shows that 81.62% of the people feel the cost is “too much”; 16.07% say it is “acceptable” since celebrative activities like wedding ceremonies often cost a lot of money; another 2.31% of the people say the cost is “not high at all” and they “can afford it”.
The survey shows that 81.6% of the young couples in China rely on their parents' financial support for wedding costs. Many young people think of their parents first when they need money for weddings.
