Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 27 – A poll conducted by a website among 4,500 Shanghai local residents last Thursday shows that about 7% of the families in the city had experienced domestic violence. Cold relations between husband and wife, extra-marital affair and mental illness are said to be the main reasons causing violence in the family, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported.
The poll, conducted by smmail.cn (or mail box for city residents), a network service platform in Shanghai, shows that 7% of people say they have experienced domestic violence and another 9% say they “might” have experienced it since they are not clear whether what has happened between them can be defined as “domestic violence.”
74% of the people say that when husband and wife who do not speak to each other for a long time it can be regarded as another form of domestic violence, and 20% of people admit, or express in an indirect way, that apart from experiencing a lack of communication with their spouse1, they are also often laughed at by their spouse because of their weakness or some defect.
Cold relationship between husband and wife is the largest factor that contributes to domestic violence, since 58% of domestic violence cases are caused by it, followed by psychological problems of the one who perpetrate domestic violence (53%) or has an extramarital affair (51%).
In addition, 49% of the people say that males, especially those who are a male chauvinist2, or who indulge in drinking or gambling3, are most likely to perpetrate domestic violence. 26% of the people lay the blame for domestic violence to the one who suffer from some physiological4 deficiency and can not satisfy his or her spouse. If such physical disease lasts for a long time, it can also lead to violence between the couple.
When encountering domestic violence, 12% of the people choose to “divorce without hesitation” while a majority of the people (60%) prefer to “try to resolve the confrontation5 by finding out the basic reason and eliminating it.” Still, 4% of the people say they will “live under the current situation without expecting a better life”, 2% of the people will “forgive their spouse” and 1% say they will “tolerate it without any complaints.”
