Chinanews, Beijing, December 6 – Some 263 thousand monitoring cameras have been installed in Beijing.

These cameras can be divided into two categories. The first is installed by the municipal government to enhance public security. The second is invested by the general public, and installed in financing institutions, colleges, shopping malls, hotels, enterprises and communities.

Beijing municipal government has also released a regulation on the installation of monitoring cameras in the city, excluding the places liable to encroachment¹ on residents' privacy. Besides, individuals are not allowed to install monitoring cameras in public places, or a fine of 500 to 1,000 yuan will be imposed on them.

However, the regulations have not been carried through, and some of the cameras are really misused². It should be the government's responsibility to put them on the right track as soon as possible.
