Chinanews, Guangzhou, December 21 – According to Guangzhou Daily, over 50% of children in Guangzhou have been physically1 punished, mostly by their parents, and some by their teachers.
Most parents and teachers who have punished the children believe physical punishment is good for their development. UNICEF and the All-China Women's Federation2 held the 2nd meeting of its Project Against Violence on Children in Guangzhou, which was launched on a trial basis in Guangdong, Shaanxi and Zhejiang provinces in last June. This five-year project was designed to improve family education by restricting physical punishment. Guangdong has composed a specific plan for the project, and it is confident in setting up a rescue network to help young victims there before 2010. The local government is also planning to build psychological clinics for those children.
