50% of kids in Guangzhou suffer from physical punishment

Chinanews, Guangzhou, December 21 – According to Guangzhou Daily, over 50% of children in Guangzhou have been physically¹ punished, mostly by their parents, and some by their teachers.

Most parents and teachers who have punished the children believe physical punishment is good for their development.

UNICEF and the All-China Women's Federation² held the 2nd meeting of its Project Against Violence on Children in Guangzhou, which was launched on a trial basis in Guangdong, Shaanxi and Zhejiang provinces in last June. This five-year project was designed to improve family education by restricting physical punishment.

Guangdong has composed a specific plan for the project, and it is confident in setting up a rescue network to help young victims there before 2010. The local government is also planning to build psychological clinics for those children.
