Chinanews, Nanjing, December 28 – With the arrival of winter, professional beggars gather in the subway of Nanjing, who have become a big problem to Nanjing Subway Administration. Although sending non-locals is in past tense, Nanjing has found another way to “lay off” the professional beggars.
Professional beggars in Nanjing usually wear no ragged1 clothes, thus it is hard to distinguish them from other passengers. A professional beggar in Nanjing earns at least 5,000 yuan. Many citizens agree that professional beggars will only tarnish2 the image of Nanjing. Our reporter went to the Nanjing subway to confirm the situation, discovering that a female beggar in her 20s or 30s with a little girl easily got some 6 or 7 yuan within 5 minutes. Thus Nanjing Subway Administration is planning to set up a “Subway Protection Office”to deal with them. With the help of cameras on platforms and in carriages, the office will be able to track down the beggars. Begging in the subway will be forbidden by the new regulations in 2007.
