Chinanews, Shanghai, January 10 – Many “empty-nest” senior citizens in Shanghai feel lonely and depressed1. A recent survey in Shanghai reveals that some 90% of them badly need communication and care, 16.1% of whom even feel life too boring.
Over 700 thousand senior citizens in Shanghai live in “empty nests”, 170 thousand of them being widow or widowers2. Most of these “empty-nest”senior citizens spend the better part of a day watching TV and cooking. Playing mahjong and chatting with neighbors are their only entertainment. Obviously the children of “empty-nest” senior citizens should once in a while visit with their parents to ease their loneliness and depression.
