Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 25 – The experience of Weiwei is as unusual as a story in a novel. She was born with three legs and was abandoned by her parents in a temple. She was later taken in by a man and they made a living by begging in streets. She was later sent to Beijing for an operation, Beijing Morning Post reported.
Last year, Weiwei’s experiences aroused great concern from the Beijing public. She now has recovered from her disease and lives temporarily in the China Children Foundation Society, expecting to have a new family. In the winter of 2004, she was picked up by Han Fuzhong in a Buddhist1 temple in Yongnian County, Hebei province. When Han found her, her body was all covered in blood and she had an extra leg under her hips2. She had both female and male reproductive organs. Having no children of his own, Han took the baby home and gave her a name, Weiwei. The two later made a living by begging in streets in Handan city. Many people showed their sympathy to them by leaving some coins in their begging bowl when passing by. In 2005, Lu Junjie, a photographer, happened to see them begging on a street and took a picture of them. He posted the picture on a website urging people to help them. Later, their picture was seen by staff workers from the Children’s Hope & Relief Fund under the China Association of Social Workers. They contacted Lu and sent Weiwei to the Dongzhimen Hospital in Beijing. Here doctors removed her extra leg and the male reproductive organ. Her experiences aroused many people’s concern. Now she looks just like any girl.
