The Kurdistan Region Security Council says the alleged¹ chemical attack took place on January 23rd on a road running between Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, and the Syrian border.

 

Video provided by the council shows a truck racing² down a road, white smoke pouring out of it, after it came under heavy fire from Peshmerga fighters. 

 

Peshmerga fighters later found around 20 gas canisters after the truck was disabled.

 

Kurdish lawmaker Adil Nouri is calling for an international investigation³.

 

"The IS has used chlorine gas in attacking Peshmerga troops. This gas has been classified under the list of chemical weapons, so we call upon international forums⁴ and organizations to conduct an immediate⁵ investigation within a week. They should help Iraqis to get rid of such evil." 

 

However, there has been no independent confirmation⁶ of the Kurds' claim so far. 

 

This isn't the first time the Islamic State has been accused of using chemical weapons. 

 

Iraqi officials are still looking into reports Islamic State fighters were using chlorine gas during battles last year.
