US President Barack Obama has admitted that the United States does not yet have a "complete strategy" for helping1 Iraq regain2 territory from the Islamic State group.
美国总统奥巴马承认,对于帮助伊拉克夺回被伊斯兰国家组织占领的领土,美国尚未有一个“完备的策略”。
Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Germany, Obama says the Pentagon is reviewing ways to help Iraq train and equip its forces.
"One of the areas where we're going to have to improve is the speed at which we are training the Iraqi security forces. Where we've trained Iraqi forces directly and equip them and we have a train and assist posture3, they operate effectively. Where we haven't, morale4, like equipment, etc, may undermine the effectiveness of the Iraqi security forces."
But Obama also stresses a full commitment to the process by the Iraqis themselves is needed.
Obama earlier met Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Germany to discuss the fight against the Islamic State.
The extremist group has recently made gains in Iraq, taking the city of Ramadi, capital of Iraq's Anbar province, despite US-led coalition5 air strikes.
US officials have cited a lack of training as a major factor in the fall of Ramadi.
