Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced plans to step down, paving the way for new elections.
希腊总理阿列克西斯·齐普拉斯宣布辞职计划,为新选举创造条件。
"I will go to the president to submit my resignation as well as the resignation of the government. The
mandate1 I received on January 25th has
exhausted2 its limits, and now people must decide anew."
Tsipras has
opted3 for early elections to try to
consolidate4 his position as Prime Minister in the vote, which will take place on September 20th.
This comes after nearly 30 percent of the lawmakers from his Syriza Party refused to back the new bailout deal in Parliament last week, forcing him to
garner5 support from the
opposition6 to get the deal done.
Tsipras, whose Syriza Party flew into power last year on a mandate to end the austerity measures Greece has been enduring to secure its previous bailouts, says his re-election will put them back on that path.
"You, with your vote, will decide if this agreement we achieved is enough for the the dead end we had reached to be overcome, for the economy to
rebound7, and for us to finally
extricate8 ourselves from bailouts and austerity."
