Mar1. 3 - The annual session of China's top advisory2 body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, gets underway in Beijing. On Friday, the session released an outline of the major areas of focus over the next few days. Liu Ying reports.
Speaking at a press conference, spokesman Wu Jianmin said the top advisory body will discuss the CPPCC National Committee work report. They will also attend the annual session of the National People's Congress as non-voting members. CPPCC members will discuss the government's work report and reports from other government departments. They will also deliberate on the draft Property Law and Enterprise Income Tax Law. Wu called the session an important one held at a pivotal time in China's development. He said CPPCC members are more concerned about issues relating to people's lives. "During this year's session, the CPPCC members will pay more attention on issues concerning social fairness, society building and the public interests, such as those on education, housing and medical care." Wu said. Wu also said the CPPCC has made substantial progress over the past year in political consultation3, democratic supervision4 and managing state affairs. "In China, the process of decision-making is a process of seeking consensus5. The CPPCC has played a very important role in this process." Wu added. The 5th session of the 10th CPPCC National Committee will run for 12 days and is scheduled to finish on March the 15th. This year's session of the CPPCC National Committee will last two-day longer than the previous sessions. This is mainly for the deliberation of two new laws with milestone6 significance - the Property Law and new Enterprise Income Tax Law.
