BEIJING, June 26 -- President Hu Jintao Monday once again stressed the importance of implementing1 the scientific concept of development, promoting social harmony and building a well-off society.
"Against the current international backdrop, China faces unprecedented2 opportunities and challenges, which require us to have a clear view of today's China and the world, meet new demands of development and new expectations of the public, draw experience and formulate3 scientific guidelines," he said ahead of the 17th national congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) later this year. Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when addressing a senior course for ministerial officials and provincial4 heads at the CPC Central Committee's Party School. He told the officials that all Party members should "remain sober-minded" and keep in mind the real situation of the country. Top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier5 Wen Jiabao and other members of the Political Bureau Standing6 Committee - Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Vice-President Zeng, who is also president of the Party school. Hu stressed that it was necessary to analyze7 the opportunities and challenges that China was facing in globalization, and the scientific concept of development should be implemented8. Since the 16th CPC national congress in 2002, the CPC Central Committee proposed the scientific concept of development which focuses on a people-oriented, overall, coordinated9 and sustainable development.
