Chinanews, Lhasa, December 10 – By the end of 2006, there were 62,211 officials of different ethnic1 minorities in Tibet, taking up 69% of the total. The number of professionals and technicians of ethnic minority origins was 32,300, taking up 74% of the total. Ethic2 minority people now play a key part in administration of the Tibet Autonomous3 Region.
Most residents in Tibet are of ethnic minority origins. In 1954, at the beginning of the democratic reform of Tibet regional government, there were only 2,767 ethnic minority officials in Tibet, taking up 30% of the total number. In 1965, when the Tibet Autonomous Region was founded, the number of Tibetan officials broke 16,000, including 1,000-odd high officials, most of whom used to be slaves or serfs. After 2000, more than 280 ethnic miority public servants have become county-section level officials. 2,386 of the 3,310 new public servants this year are of ethic minority background, too.
