Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 27 – A recent survey carried out by the China Youth Daily shows that the great majority of Chinese people hope that China might soon rise as a big nation in the world and their desire for China’s resurgence1 is quite strong. Indeed, when asked “Do you have a wish that China could realize its dream of becoming a big nation in the world soon?” 80.4% of the respondents say that they “definitely have such wish.”
The survey shows that many Chinese people are well aware of such sensitive words as “big nation” or “resurgence.” When asked whether Chinese public should think about the issue of the country’s resurgence now, 10.5% of the people feel it “hard to say”, 34.8% say it’s still too early to discuss the issue and 54.7% of the people say “yes.” The proportion2 of people who give a definite answer is even higher (63.0%) among readers of the China Youth Daily, whose target reading group are mainly urban intellectuals3. In addition, 12,140 people answer the question via Tencent website and 52.0% of the people give a definite answer to this question.
Although most respondents agree that the time has come for Chinese to discuss such issue, many people keep a cool head when judging the country’s current capability4 in realizing such goal. Among all the 15,000 interviewees who answer the question, only 1.6% think that China “ has already risen as a big nation”, while 49.0% think China is “on its way of becoming a big nation” and 47.0% say China “has not become a big nation yet.” Most Chinese people think that China can be regarded as a big nation only in terms of its population (82.1%) and in the sports field (50.9%). The sense of recognition5 is quite low in the fields of politics (40.3%), foreign affairs (38.2%), economy (37.2%), culture (26.5%), natural resources (26.2%) and military field (24.8%). It should be noted6 that the vast majority of the people (95.7%) think that currently7 Chinese people’s national quality can hardly be regarded as typical of citizens of a big nation.
