Taliban militants¹ have killed eight Afghan police officers in the northern province of Kunduz, police have said.

阿富汗警方称，塔利班武装分子在北方昆都士省杀害8名警员。

More than 10 insurgents³（叛乱分子） raided a checkpoint（检查站，关卡） outside Kunduz city just before dawn, a police officer said.

The militants wanted steal the officer's weapons but were beaten back before they could do so, he said. One policeman was wounded and one escaped.

Kunduz is a stronghold（要塞，大本营） for Taliban and al-Qaeda militants where the central government has little control.

The Taliban and other insurgent² groups began systematically⁴ taking over Kunduz in early 2009.

They are now increasingly using it as a base to launch attacks elsewhere in the region.

Earlier this month, a Taliban suicide bomber⁵ killed six policemen in Kunduz.

The Taliban also publicly stoned to death a couple accused of an illicit⁶（违法的，不正当的） affair.
