A suicide car bomber¹ has struck a joint² Afghan-Nato military base in eastern Paktia province, say officials.

Nato spokesman Maj Adam Wojack said there were a number of casualties among the Afghan military personal.

No members of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) were reported to have been injured, said Maj Wojack.

Foreign forces are due to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2014, which has sparked fears of a surge in violence.

An Isaf spokesman told AFP the combat outpost in Zurmat district was attacked by "insurgents³ using a vehicle-borne improvised⁴ explosive device".

A spokesman for the Paktiya provincial⁵ governor told the agency that 10 wounded Afghan soldiers had evacuated⁶.
